Hamilton Relay Adds New Employee Positions -- Expanding Workforce

March, 01 2012

Frostburg, Maryland center in Allegany County prepares for growth

Hamilton Relay, a leading Telecommunications Relay and Captioned Telephone services provider, announced today that it is expanding its workforce and hiring for new positions at its Frostburg, Maryland center.

A long-time provider of captioned telephone services, Hamilton Relay recently began processing this special call type from its own relay centers. Hamilton Relay has already expanded its Nebraska and Louisiana centers and now has plans to add another 44 workstations to its center in Frostburg, Maryland.

Captioned Telephone Relay Service (CTRS) is designed for individuals who have difficulty hearing on the telephone. Captioned Telephone (CapTel®) technology, developed by Ultratec, Inc. of Madison, Wisconsin, allows individuals to view word-for-word captions of what's being said to them on a display screen of a CapTel phone – similar to captions on television.

Using a CapTel phone consumers can "see what they say" and not miss a word of their telephone conversations. Behind the scenes, a specially trained Captioning Assistant re-voices everything said by the standard phone user to state-of-the-art voice recognition software. The speech is then converted almost simultaneously into text on the CapTel phone. The captions are available in English or Spanish.

The company said it will look to immediately fill 40 positions for Captioning Assistants in the Frostburg center, where it has been located since 2007. They will hire an additional 40-50 over time – bringing about 85-95 new, full-time/part-time, day/evening and weekend job opportunities to Allegany County. Currently, the Frostburg center employs approximately 80 Hamilton employees.

"We are excited about the growth of our services and the opportunity it brings for Hamilton, its employees and for the community and surrounding area of Frostburg," said John Nelson, President of Hamilton Relay. "We are grateful for the support we have received from the Frostburg community, the Allegany County Commissioners, and Allegany County Economic Development and are pleased to reinvest our resources back into the community through these new employment opportunities."

The expansion of its workforce in Frostburg, Maryland will require a larger working environment than what is currently available. The Allegany County Commissioners, who provide the current leasing terms, have committed to providing additional floor space to Hamilton by negotiating terms for the first floor of the building. This will allow Hamilton, which currently occupies the second floor, to occupy the entire building going forward. "It is our pleasure as Commissioners to provide the needed resources to Hamilton that allow them to expand in Allegany County and provide new jobs to our residents," said Michael W. McKay, President of the Allegany County Board of Commissioners. "We welcome this announcement as a commitment to our community."

"Companies like Hamilton Telecommunications bring diversity to our ever changing employment base in Allegany County. What a great success story in regards to Hamilton and their continued growth both here and nationally," said Matthew W. Diaz, Director of Allegany County Economic Development. "This is a great business retention and expansion story."

Applications for the Captioning Assistant positions can be completed online at www.workforhamilton.com, or at the Frostburg Center located at 1 Science Park in the Frostburg Business Park. For more information, contact Human Resources via email at HR@HamiltonTel.com or call 301-689-5195.
